Culturally Responsive Teaching and ELA
Culturally responsive teaching (CRT), is something to really keep in mind when teaching ELA. While Hammond's book, Culturally Responsive Teaching & The Brain, could be applied to any class, I intend on focusing CRT in ELA with proper diversity and community building. I Intend on building trust with my students by letting them help set the classroom expectations and room decorations to what makes them feel comfortable. I'd also like to tailor my teaching best I can so that I can appeal to my students' different learning methods. As a queer person and a minority, I would love to shape the curriculum to include literary works that each of my students can see themselves in and can relate to.
Hello, I think that is great that you are going to incorporate your own identities into the classroom and into the curriculum. That is a great way to really connect to your students and show them that you are being vulnerable and trying to show your humanity to the students. I also think that can be a great way for them to open up themself. My question is what ways will you incorporate your own personal experience into lessons, and how could you open it up to students to try and do the same?
ReplyDeleteI notice that at the end of your post you inject your own identity into the possibility of being taught in your class: "As a queer person and a minority, I would love to shape the curriculum to include literary works that each of my students can see themselves in and can relate to". I think that you are saying that by opening up to students about your identity, other students will be more likely to follow your example, right? Do you have any specific texts that you can see yourself doing to accomplish that goal?
